G.R.O.O.M

G.R.O.O.M was established in June 2015 with the aim of addressing the unique challenges faced by black young males in our community. We recognize the importance of positive role models, access to resources, and mentorship in shaping their future success. Through our comprehensive programs, we strive to equip these young men with the necessary tools, skills, and support to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
Our focus is on integrating mental health and trauma-informed care into the in-depth self-esteem work we do With our clients, knowing that they are all connected. Many of the girls that come through our doors have suffered a variety of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), therefore much of our programming targets life skills that will help them not just heal, but thrive. Many of the girls in our program have suffered one or more ACES, be it: Physical, Emotional, Sexual Abuse Physical or Emotional Neglect Household Dysfunction, including Mental Illness, an Incarcerated Relative, Mother Treated Violently, or Divorce Because of this, we know it is imperative that we work in partnership with the community organizations we've outlined throughout this proposal to create effective programs to prevent ACEs and/or mitigate the impact ACES can have on a child's health and lifestyle.
Our proposed program encompasses a range of initiatives designed to support the holistic development of black young males. These include:
Mentoring Program:
We will recruit and train a diverse group of mentors who will provide guidance, support, and positive role modeling to our mentees. The mentors will engage in one-on-one sessions, group activities, and workshops to address various aspects of personal development, academic achievement, and life skills.
Academic Support:
We will establish tutoring and academic enrichment programs to assist our mentees in their educational pursuits. This will include homework assistance, test preparation, college and career guidance, and access to educational resources.
OUR MISSION
To empower Black young males by integrating trauma-informed mental health support with holistic self-esteem and life-skill development, delivering mentorship, academic enrichment, and community partnerships that prevent ACEs, mitigate their impact, and help mentees thrive academically, personally, and socially.
OUR VISION
A community where Black young men flourish with resilient mental health, strong self-worth, and meaningful opportunities—supported by trusted mentors, comprehensive education resources, and collaborative partners—so they can break cycles of adversity and realize their full potential.
Our Story
Our belief is simple: every young person deserves support that elevates strengths, honors experiences, and helps them thrive. Many girls in our community carry Adverse Childhood Experiences, and healing requires more than individual care—it requires integrating mental health, trauma-informed support, and authentic self-esteem work into daily life. By partnering with trusted community organizations, we provide mentorship, life skills, and academic resources that illuminate paths to wellness and success.
G.R.O.O.M began in 2015 to uplift Black young males with positive role models, practical guidance, and access to opportunities. Our network of mentors, educators, and advocates champions sustained, compassionate relationships that change lives. Through one-on-one mentoring, group work, and career exploration, we foster confidence, discipline, and curiosity centered on trauma-informed practices and collaboration to help mentees heal, lead, and break cycles of adversity.
